The Vessel

An original creation by Devina Heart | Veilcraft Studio

There are things the world can take from us.

Our peace. Our certainty. Our sense of safety. Even the pieces of ourselves we once believed could never be broken.

But there are things that survive.

Once worn to ward against death, the plague doctor's mask has become something else entirely. No longer a shield against the world, but a vessel for what remains when the world has taken nearly everything.

Within it rests a heart, weathered but still whole enough to beat.

From that heart, poppies bloom in remembrance of all that has been endured, while calla lilies rise in quiet defiance, carrying the promise that life can emerge even from the deepest grief.

The straps that once secured the mask to its wearer now bind its fragile contents together.

Not to imprison them.

But to keep them from being lost.

For there is a kind of preservation that is neither stillness nor surrender. It is the stubborn, sometimes painful act of continuing to nurture something beautiful when everything around it has become unkind.

And so the vessel holds.

Not what has died.

But what refused to.
